"I’ve always felt that some places in the world have within them a certain aura, a feeling, even a smell that sends you back to the best parts of your life....that place was absolutely smothered in a special kind of nostalgic magic." --The Cottage at Prince Lake

Memories can be strange, especially for storytellers.

I come from a long line of storytellers who truly knew how to spin a yarn. These family members of mine -- particularly my grandfathers on either side of my family --could entertain a crowd around a campfire for hours on end, so long as there was barbecue on the grill and a cooler full of beer nearby. Each of them was an expert at walking the blurry line of fiction and reality as if it were a tightrope. To this day, I still don't know the level of truth in some of my favorite stories they used to tell me. Each of my grandfathers have passed away from this world. But their stories, which are filled to the brim with hilarity, charm, and heartache, allow them to live forever in a way.

Told from the perspective of Joel O'Donnell, a smiling preteen troublemaker, The Cottage at Prince Lake is a series of short stories recounting his family's adventures at their lakeside cottage in Southern Indiana. These tales paint a playful portrait of small town midwestern life. Like the stories told by my grandfathers, the fables within these pages are mostly works of fiction. But I have a feeling that they will ring true to you nevertheless.

The Cottage at Prince Lake started out as a personal project that was a kind of love letter to my family's history. But it quickly morphed into something more, something that had potential to resonate with just about anybody. It will be like when you hear a cover version of a familiar song. You've heard the original time and time again, but every once in a while you hear a new version, and it makes you go: "huh. I recognize that." When you crack the book open, my hope is that you'll find love, loss, and laughter inside that will spark up old memories of your own. I hope you enjoy it.
